November 3, 2025 by Alyx Dellamonica

The University of Toronto awarded graduate degrees in chemistry on Wednesday October 29 to 32 students at Convocation Hall on the St. George campus.

Ten MSc and 22 PhD students received their degrees at the Convocation ceremony, coming together afterward at Davenport Hall in the Lash Miller Building to take photos and celebrate their achievements with family and supporters.

"This is a special day for everyone graduating," Department of Chemistry Chair Mark Lautens said in congratulatory remarks to the gathering, "And it's also a special day for the parents, brothers, sisters, and partners who have come today to celebrate the hard work done by an extraordinary group of young people."

Lautens spoke of the breadth of research expertise and support represented by the students in their successful pursuit of advanced degrees, and wished all of the department's newest alumni a long career in chemistry and science. "Getting a Ph.D. was a terrific milestone in my life and led to some wonderful experiences and opportunities. There are many paths that our students take: some take the traditional route into academia, others go into industry, others go into government, while a few will become entrepreneurs and build companies. We hope all of them are successful."

He urged everyone present to savour the moment as he offered congratulations on behalf of the department and the Chemistry community.

The Department of Chemistry celebrates the remarkable accomplishments of all our graduates and encourages them to stay connected as they embrace new opportunities and explore life beyond academia. For a complete list of students who completed an MSc or PhD at Chemistry, either during the 2025-24 Academic year or previously, please visit the Graduate Student Alumni page on the Chemistry website.
