Barb Morra circular head shot

Welcome to our Monthly Reminders page — a short list of important opportunities, deadlines, and department updates to help you stay on track throughout your chemistry studies. Each month, you’ll find timely notices about courses, scholarships, events, and administrative tasks gathered for you by Barb Morra, Associate Chair, Undergraduate.

Check back regularly to make sure you don’t miss anything that can support your academic progress and enrich your experience in the program.

Here are a few important opportunities upcoming this month.

May 2026

This will be my last monthly message until the new academic year. Now that the April final exams are almost over, I hope you have a chance to relax and enjoy the summer months! Here is some information for you to be aware of:

Introducing an exciting new 200-level CHM course in Winter 2027: CHM 229H (Data Analysis in Chemistry)!:

CHM 229H is designed to teach mathematics in-house—by chemists, for chemists, and as an extension to the newly introduced CHM228H. This course introduces chemistry students to the fundamental concepts and practical skills of data analysis, with a focus on chemical applications. Course content includes descriptive and inferential statistics, data visualization, linear and nonlinear regression, multivariable analysis, dimensionality reduction, and an introduction to predictive modelling and machine learning. Emphasis is placed on hands-on experience through weekly Python-based computer labs using real datasets.

CHM 228H1 (Introduced in Fall 2025) and CHM 229H1 (starting in Winter 2027) may be taken instead of MAT 235Y/MAT 237Y towards the requirements of the Chemistry Specialist and Synthetic/Catalytic Specialist programs.

The course will appear in the Academic Calendar when it goes live in May 2026.

For more information about CHM 229H, please contact Professor Sakaya (aya.sakaya@utoronto.ca).
