Health and Safety Message from the Chair

Welcome to the Department of Chemistry! I do hope that your stay here with us is exciting, interesting, challenging, and productive. The University of Toronto is by far the largest research enterprise and educator of university students in Canada. Our mission within the university is to deliver excellence in teaching and research. We are also committed to the health and safety of our staff, and to the preservation of our environment.

To assist your understanding of our health, safety and environmental policies and procedures, our Department Safety Committee has developed this online Safety Orientation Guide. All new staff, graduate students, undergraduates who work in the research lab, postdoctoral fellows, and researchers are expected to review this guide before working in the department, and to continue working in a safe manner.

The purpose of this site is to provide a starting point for reviewing Health & Safety information and a reference point for use by Department of Chemistry students, staff and visitors. Please note that the Department requires new researchers, visitors and staff to complete our in-person Safety Orientation Course before working in any lab or facility. This course is mandatory for all students and visitors (that is, anyone who will be working in a lab regardless of what type) before undertaking research or work in a research lab. For information on the course, please visit the Onboarding Training Requirements webpage or contact Victoria Cincotta at 978-6936 or vicky.cincotta@utoronto.ca

We are very proud to have an active safety program in Chemistry. The names and phone numbers of the members of our Safety Committee are outlined at the beginning of this course. Please do not hesitate to contact anyone of them if you have any concerns, questions, and suggestions.
