Graduate course offerings for the 2025/26 academic year are posted on the Course Timetable below. For the detailed course syllabus, click the course code to view it.
Students must enroll in courses on-line through ACORN. When completing on-line enrollment for courses, please note the following:
- CHM1102H, CHM1420H and CHM1290Y are the course numbers.
- Grad courses have 4 numerical digits. For cross-listed courses, do not use the three digit undergraduate course codes.
- Suffixes "F", "S" and "Y" represent the course sections.
- Courses with suffix "F" will run during the Fall term (September to December).
- Courses with suffix "S" will run during the Second term (January to April).
- Courses with suffix "Y" will run the entire year (September to April).
Information regarding registration and enrollment.
Students must also complete the Departmental Course Enrollment Form.
The enrollment form should be completed in consultation with the research supervisor. Students may begin requesting courses on August 5. The completed and signed enrollment form must then be submitted to the Chemistry Graduate Office SharePoint via MS Form by September 15. January registrants submit by January 16. This does not apply to non-degree Special Student or exchange students.
To cancel or add a course after submitting the Course Enrollment Form to the Chemistry Graduate Office—prior to SGS deadlines—you must update your enrollment on ACORN and email the Graduate Office , copying your research advisor and course instructor. This process does not apply to non-degree Special Students or exchange students.
The final date to drop Fall session courses without academic penalty (i.e., a permanent WDR notation on your transcript) is on October 26, 2026. For full-year and Winter session courses, the deadline is on February 26, 2027. These are firm SGS deadlines.
If you have questions about course requirements, please contact the Graduate Office. Alternatively, you can also speak with Graduate Studies Committee field representatives. They are listed below:

The Ontario Visiting Graduate Student Agreement (OVGS) permits a registered student in good academic standing to take a limited number of degree program course requirements at an Ontario university without completing further admission formalities. Graduate course(s) taken through OVGS are subject to the regulations and deadlines of the host institution. These course(s) must be requirements of the U of T degree program, and must not be available at U of T. Normally graduate students should not participate in OVGS in their final year unless the official grade will be received by the SGS final grade and degree recommendation submission deadlines. The graduate student pays tuition fees at U of T as per normal and is classified as a non-degree student at the host university. No tuition fees will be assessed by the host institution; however, applicable incidental fees will be charged. For more information, visit the SGS website.
With the approval by the Graduate Department of Chemistry and the School of Graduate Studies, a student may be exempt from a specific course requirement (generally in this case a core-course) permitting the substitution of another course to meet degree requirements. Overall course credit requirements for the degree are not reduced.
Doctoral students who completed their undergraduate degrees at U of T and who have taken cross-listed courses are eligible to apply for course exemption, if applicable.
Pre-approval is required before applying for a course exemption. Students should email the Chemistry Graduate Office for approval of the course they wish to take as a substitute for a core course before enrolling in the course. After successful completion of the substituting course, forward the SGS Transfer Credit and/or Exemption form to the Chemistry Graduate Office along with a brief letter of rationale, copies of the course syllabi (the core-course to be exempted and substituting course), confirmation of approval from the supervisor and Grad Studies Representatitve. In the case of substituting a core course, the letter should demonstrate that the substituting course is more appropriate for the research.
